Torchwood - Children of Earth - Part V

It feels like everything's already been said but I had promised I would review the five episodes:

    I watched the last episode with fairy_bliss, ephyse and rosengirl (by tthe way, thanks again for the invitation! I really had a great time! :D). It was SO quiet during the whole episode! ^^ None of us talked!

   This is EXACTLY how I thought Torchwood would end. Gwen going back to a "normal" life, Ianto dead and Jack leaving Cardiff to travel. Honestly that is the exact same thing I had imagined. There is one major difference though: I thought it would be the very last episode...

   I am quite happy about the writing, the show was brought to a whole new level but I still regret the timing.
   I had time to think about Ianto's death and it still kind of feels the same. Even after giving it a few thought, I still think Toshiko and Ianto were under developped characters. It is not their deaths that trouble me (as I said, I was absolutely persuaded Ianto would die at the end of the show) but the fact that it happened before they got what they deserved: good and well-developed story arcs. I like his death scene but it doesn't make up for the fact that his WHOLE story was badly handled. I also tend to get a bit angry when I read interviews that were made just before CoE was aired... Ooooh the subtle art of manipulation! RTD: you, sir, have mastered it!
   My other reproach is that killing off Ianto AND Steven (+ Owen + Tosh + Suzie + Grey + Myfanwy + Janet + The Hub...) and making Jack "lose" his daughter was just a bit too much... I feel like RTD has succumbed to a very fashionable tentation amongst TV shows writers at the moment. But I have already talked about it a lot...
   However, I have learned that James Moran will release a book in october (or is it november?) that will be set BEFORE Children of Earth. Weird decision but that means we still have a chance of finding out a bit more about Ianto before completely running out of original material. I'm afraid Tosh, on the other hand, has been "archieved" already... :/

   Anyway! As I said, I still had loads of fun watching Children of Earth, I will definitely buy the DVDs and the soundtrack (=> Ianto Jones ballad!) and try and find out more about possible reapparitions of our dear Captain! PC Andy has kept on being funny and awesome, I have discovered lots of new comedians that I'll definitely be watching, John Barrowman has been getting better at playing dark!Jack, Eve Myles still is the most gorgeous thing Wales has ever given birth to and this image of Jack on a hill was simply beautiful and very in-character.

Bye bye Torchwood! It's really been great fun! And eventhough I'm ranting right now, I know I won't resist the tentation of watching series 4 if there ever is one and will keep on being active in the fandom, read fics and stuff! And well, Captain Jack still is one of my favorite characters ever and he's still part of the Whoniverse so see you soon! :)

PS: I went to WHSmith Paris to buy the TW magazine and when I went to the cashier he almost sceamed "Oh my, I-have-seen-the-end-did-you-see-it-too??". I was surprised to find someone who knew about Torchwood especially since he was a sort of 30 year old big muscly guy XD We agreed on the fact that the end was a bit rushed but we are both really looking forward to Jack's return! :D

   I read the spoiler 2 hours before I saw the episode.

   Honestly, I know I'm just upset at the moment but in all objectivity, it's a very bad move for the show and one of the worst choices RTD has made. He really underestimated the number of people who watch Torchwood for the characters. Because let's be honest, eventhough Torchwood has gotten more plotty and well written, it still doesn't stand on its own! I don't know if I'm making myself clear...
   Episodes like "Cyberwoman" (ridiculous monster, too long...) was only interesting because of the interaction between the characters! All those fics and metas that have been trying to analyse this episode ever since it's aired are proof enough! We don't care about the bloody fairies, the alien sex gas or Abaddon! Ok I'm exagerating again. We do. A bit. But not enough to keep watching if they take away the rest!

   As I said just yesterday: series 3 has made me proud of being a Torchwood fan because for the first time I had the feeling I was watching a quality show with a strong, solid scenario. But it's only recent! If they go back to the old 13 episodes format, they'll start writing silly episodes again! And I didn't use to care, as long as I had something else on the side.

   But now they killed it so I'm not sure I want to make the effort.
   I can't remember who but someone tweeted "Congratulations on your suicide note". THIS! Because it still was a great episode and The Scene was very good as well. It's just that it was premature and yes, basically just comitting suicide. Now I just wonder if they have realised this yet.

Oh and I'm a bit upset at the moment so sorry for the mistakes, my English grammar has left me the minute I read the spoiler... Not even trusting myself to speak French!

Have not been able to resist the tentation. Have watched the episode at 1 in the morning so here's my review (yes, I'm at work, why? ^^)

   I really don't know if that's because I was completely knackered but I sort of was... disappointed by the third episode. No, the word disappointed is a bit too strong. It's just that I felt nothing but enthusiasm when it came to parts 1 and 2 and yesterday was the first time I had a few remarks to make.

   First, I have to admit that the 456 are absolutely terrifying BUT the second scene with them was a bit too long. The first time Frobisher meets them (by the way, isn't Peter Capaldi just great?) really scared me (at one point there was so much tension that I realized all my muscles were contracted). But then there was (what felt like) this veeery long scene with Lois (or is it Louise?) where Frobisher goes back to talk to the 456 with the "elected" representatives of Earth. Waaaayy tttooooo looooong... Yeees we knooooow, teeeenssiooooon... OK, maybe I'm exagerating a tiny bit. But this series is so good that for the first time we have the luxury of pointing out all the "weaker" moments. So in a way that's a compliment!

   Then, at the very end, there was Jack's revelation. I mean, was anyone really shoked? The writers have always told us that Jack has a very, <i>very</i> dark past. By now, we've all had the time to imagine what kind of atrocities he's responsible of (why, yes! I do like to sit and think of how evil my favorite characters can be and what disgusting things they might have done!). I knew there'd be a big revelation about Jack and I was wondering if the scenarists would really manage to shock the fans. And in my opinion, they failed. I mean, that was the big revelation? He sacrificed a dozen of kids? Hardly surprising for a guy who's already have had to sacrifice a child in the 1st series (remember the fairies? OK, the circumstances were different but still... We KNOW Captain Jack is no conventionnal hero!).
   To their defense I have to say that the way John Barrowman delivered the line "As a gift" was absolutely terrifying! It gave me shivers! 'cause that's the thing: we know that there's a dark side to Jack, we just don't get to see it very often. And for the first we actually SAW evil!Jack. Hope the team forgives him pretty quickly though...

   I think I was even more disappointed because the episode was written by James Moran and so I had great expectations (and by great I mean FRIKKIN' HUGE!). Poor guy, he really doesn't deserve this.
   I also could point out lots of great moments in last night's episode! The Hub 2! "I'm back!". "We should make the most of it then"! Criminal!Torchwood! Jack complaining about having to wear a jumper! Jack's daughter being awesome! Ianto FINALLY adressing the subject of Jack's immortality! Lois/Louise!
   By the way, I'm really warming up to her! I wouldn't mind her coming back after series 3 (eventhough I really have a bad feeling about what will become of her in the next parts...).

   I'll watch the episode again on saturday for a Torchwood marathon along with fairy_bliss, rosengirl and ephyse. We'll see if it changes my mind about Part III.

Now I'm going to leave you because I have to go and find contact lenses porn.

Torchwood - Children of Earth - Part II

I know you Brits already have had the chance to watch the third episode but I haven't and so I'm gonna write my thoughts about Part II while waiting for the torrent ^^

I thought we would see more of PC Andy! I don't know why I was persuaded he'd play a much bigger part... Anyway, he still had most of the funny lines ^^ Didn't realized how much I missed him! But yeah, I know, there still are 3 more parts and so maybe I'll get more of my favorite PC later. ^^

I am completely terrified every time Ianto is in danger. Don't worry I'm not spoiling you! As I already said, all the spoilers I have read concerned the first part. I am just really scared for him because he seems like the most vulnerable character :/ When you think about it, there doesn't seem to be another way for the writers to "get rid" of Ianto once they'll want to stop with Torchwood... You should see me in front of my screen, I look like I'm playing Super Mario "Jump! Watch out! Shoot this guy! Catch this! Run!" XD

Still no news of Myfanwy or Janet... Starting to get very worried! And I think we still haven't really realized how much of a tragedy the loss of the Hub actually is! Try and think of all the things that were kept in there! And Gray! He got blown-up too! Well, not that I'm sad about this but surely, Jack has lost a lot in this explosion. Is this one of the "sacrifices" they were all talking about in the interviews? I hope it is because I wouldn't want the "sacrifice" to be anything else. Like a Welsh archivist for example... I'M WARNING YOU WRITERS, DON'T YOU DARE DO THIS TO IANTO!!

I am very confident about tonight's episode. After all, it's been written by James Moran and everyone knows the guy's very talented as well as incredibly funny! ^^ (I do hope you're all following him on Twitter!)

To end this review, I'll just say that I approve of John Barrowman's ass. There. I've said it.

Also, I am SO TIRED! Torchwood forces me to go to bed very late and so I am now officially DED OT TORCHWUD >_<

God I'm such a geek!! Because of the Torchwood week I completely forgot to tell you that I passed my exams! :D I got the news yesterday morning and eventhough it wasn't really a surprise (what with the strike in the French universities and all...) I'm still very pleased to announce that I now have a bachelor's degree in British literature and civilisation as well as 2 years of Swedish studies "validated".

I made a promise to myself that I would try to post everyday during the Torchwood week so:

   First, I am really glad people are starting to see how awesome Gwen's character can be. Honestly, I've never been a Gwen fan but I never understood all the hate she seemed to inspire either! Now, even some of the worst Gwen-bashers start to admit that her character can be pretty cool. And Eve Myles was SO good yesterday! I was particularly impressed by the scene in which she talks with Clement but most of all, the very last scene in which she discovers she's pregnant. She looks absolutely terrified and yet, we can see that she incredibly happy. HOW DOES SHE MANAGE TO DO THAT? >_<

   Ooooh creepy children! I must admit that I was not impressed by the first trailer. I found the concept of children being used by aliens to invade Earth (or something like that since we still don't know who the 456 are) a tiny bit ridiculous. I was a bit like "Awww, good old Torchwood! You silly, silly show!". But I changed my mind yesterday 'cause GOD ARE THOSE CHILDREN CREEPY! I was watching the episode in the dark and I can tell you I had shivers!

   Of course, like every single Torchwood fan in the universe, I also appreciate that Jack and Ianto got more screentime together. I knew the story would be a bit more centered around their relationship but yesterday was a real Jack/Ianto festival! From the first scenes (all the "couple" things) to the very last! Which, by the way, was spectacular! I love how they always try to come up with new ways to kill Jack but I certainly wasn't expecting a bomb in his stomach! ^^

   I wanted to try and sleep a bit tonight but I know I won't (eventhough I have to go to work at 8.00 in the morning). Of course, I'm REALLY looking forward to tonight's episode but we didn't see much of Jack in the trailer :/ It kind of bothers me! I hope he'll come back soon in the series. But we'll get to see more of Clement, yay! ^^ I already love him to bits!
   I'm just happy that the first episode contained ALL the spoilers I had read (Jack's daughter, Gwen being pregnant...)! I have been a naughty girl and read everything I got my hands on but now I'm just like anyone else, just really, very excited! XD

   Also, for those who don't live in the UK and so have to download the episodes, here are some advice: first, you have to wait until midnight to have a hope of finding torrents (French time). Then I'd advise you to look on Twitter. I searched for the words "Torchwood" + "torrent", refreshed my page every 2 minutes or so and found a link pretty quickly. The first website to list a torrent was www.mininova.com but the download was very slow. Still, it was one of the fastest. Anyway, like I did yesterday, I'll post a link on my Twitter as soon as I find a torrent and I'll be watching you all guys in case you find one before me ^^ For those who don't know, I'm @hey_banane on Twitter.

   Also, I wanted to thank you flist! I had to wait until 1 A.M. to watch the episode but none of you posted any spoilers. Everything was neatly put behind cuts so thank you very much you nice, caring flist! ^^

Just realized that I haven't updated in a while!

Which is weird since... I'M ON HOLIDAYS! ^^ Well, not really since I have to work and earn money to pay for my year in Edinburgh but still... Results for my exams: the 6th of July. I'm pretty confident but also a little bit anxious because if I do pass, it'll mean that I finally get my degree! Yeeeeha! Good times!
In my search for a job I also discovered the French job center and it's one of the least organized places on Earth -_- Bad times...

SO! Fandom stuff!
Has anyone listened to the Torchwood radio plays? The first one was pretty boring... I mean, it was still good to get a bit of Torchwood and it wasn't even really bad but the second one was sooo much better. Torchwood India! How cool is that!
It also means that Torchweek is approaching! :D I don't really want to watch the first episodes alone so if anyone wants to watch them with me...
BUT I'm not sure I want to watch the fifth one with other people in the room. Seriously, I'm a complete and utter wimp! If you can't stand people crying for fictionnal characters just run away...

Also, the BEST F*CKING thing that happened to the Torchwood fandom has reavealed her identity!! I am sad because that means ask_captainjack will never post again or shoot things in the face but you gotta admit that this girl is a genius! She proved that some people don't take fandom too seriously and can have an awesome sense of humour about their favorite show's worst flaws.
If you've never heard about this journal, seriously just go and read it. It'll brighten your day and more importantly, teach you life and how to get laid on a regular basis ^^

I took advantage of the few days I've had between university and work to catch up on Kings. This show's amazing but I'll try to make a more complete post after having watched the first season.

Oh and I finally have a date for Edinburgh!! I''ll be leaving Paris around the 10th of september (give or take). Ooooo scary! But exciting! ^^ (that also means that I'll be watching David Tennant's last episode live on the BBC!! ^^ And yes, my real life is closely connected to fandom :P)

Sorry I'm going to write in French but I've just got to let some steam out about the strike taking place in French universities (like, REALLY).

Ce matin, j'ai fais partie de ceux qui ont essayé de bloquer l'université. Ce blocage avait été voté en Assemblée Générale à laquelle TOUS les étudiants, professeurs et personnels administratifs étaient conviés. Evidemment, seuls les étudiants mobilisés se soint pointés et le blocage a été voté. Je DETESTE les blocages. Pour moi, ce doit être le tout derniers recours quand la grève traîne en longueur. Mais ceux qui ne se sont pas pointés à l'A.G. n'ont PAS le droit de se plaindre du résultat du vote. On vit en société, bordel! J'en connais qui ont dormi au collège pendant les cours sur Athènes et la démocratie.
Si vous appreniez que quelqu'un n'a pas voté aux éléctions présidentielles, vous penseriez qu'il n'a pas le droit de se plaindre qu'on se retrouve avec Sarko pendant 4 ans, nan? Eh bien là c'est pareil. Ces gens-là veulent vivre en totale autarcie, se préoccupent de leur petit diplôme, de leur petit semestre sans essayer une seule seconde d'avoir une vision à long terme.

Et par pitié, ne me sortez pas l'excuse des pauvres étudiants boursiers (nombre d'entre eux sont mobilisés) car ils ont bien compris que si cette loi passe et que les universités sont privatisées, AUCUNE bourse ne leur permettra plus de pouvoir payer une année d'étude à la Sorbonne. Alors certes, ils risquent leur semestre mais c'est miniscule à côté du risque de que représente cette loi et qui fera qu'ils n'auront très certainement jamais les moyens d'envoyer leur enfant à l'université.

Et pour la dernière fois, arrêtez de me dire que je fais la grève car je suis une feignasse qui n'aime pas bosser. Je suis en double licence, j'ai obtenu les derniers semestres de mes deux licences avec mentions, je fais partie d'une association étudiante qui accueille le étudiants étrangers qui arrivent à Paris et je me lève à 7h tous les matins depuis 3 semaines pour le comité de mobilisation. Si j'avais cours, je n'aurai que 25h de cours par semaine et ne me lèverai jamais avant 9h.

Encore une fois, je suis loin de faire partie des extrémistes, ce matin était mon premier blocage depuis plusieurs années (et ma folle jeunesse dans un lycée de ZEP...) mais je reste persuadée que n'importe quelle personne qui ferait l'effort de serait-ce que ne s'informer sur ce qui se passe serait outrée de voir le comportement des CRS à l'égard de la population et ce que contient cette fameuse réforme.

Si cette loi passe et que dans 10, 20 ans vous n'avez pas les moyen de payer des études de vos gamins, ne venez surtout pas vous plaindre, vous en avez perdu le droit en pensant à votre semestre plutôt qu'à l'avenir de l'université et de la recherche en France.

Je précise également qu'en me mobilisant avant la fin de ma licence, je remets mon Erasmus en jeu.

PUTAIN CA VA MIEUX!

PS: ce message n'est dirigé contre personne. J'ai des amis non-mobilisés que je ne juge absolument pas. C'est juste que les 3 semaines de fatigue, les insultes et les coups commencent à peser sérieusement. J'aurai sûrement un avis plus modéré une fois calme et reposée. Quoi que... on n'est jamais qu'une bande de bolchéviques.

I've just received THE mail I had been waiting for WEEKS!

It's a mail from my university telling me that my application for the Erasmus program has been accepted! Heeee!!!! :D That means I'll be spending next year in Scotland (Edinburgh to be precise) to work on a mémoire about the BBC! Re- :D

Now I just really hope that my friend's application (who's applied for the same program) will be accepted too because I don't really want to be alone in Edinburgh :/

Oh well, half of the work's done! I'm going to keep on celebrating alone in my room waiting for my friend's message ^^

I'll be in Sweden from the 30th of June until the 11th of July so obviously I won't be around for the next 11 days. I'll maybe go into a cyber-café once or twice but that's all. I wish you all a very nice summer! :)
I'll won't forget to bring back some Ark goodness from Sundsvall and do NOT spoil me with Doctor Who 4x13 until I've seen it (but I'm pretty sure that watching it will be the very first thing I'll do once I'll be home. Geek un jour, geek toujours!)

So now, someone please explain to me: how come yesterday episode scared THE HELL OUT OF ME eventhough I know for a FACT that Sarah Jane, Ianto and Gwen cannot die!

As for the regeneration, here's my theory: look at the scene where the Dalek kills the Doctor more closely. I'm almost sure that the Doctor is only HALF-touched. As if the Dalek had only managed to stop one of the Doctor's hearts, not the other. I swear I see it, look once again and tell me.

If you think I'm seeing things just tell me :P

Oh and I watched the episode with a friend who's only ever seen series 4. He was always like "why are you surprised? Who is he? Are you sure it can really happen?". He asked me if Harriet Jones was important -_- OF COURSE SHE IS FUKING IMPORTANT YOU TWAT! Note to myself: never watch Doctor Who with a close friend but who knows too little about THE SHOW => IT CAN DESTROY FRIENDSHIPS!!! XD
I definitely need more Whovian friends.

Oh and one last thing: Gwen and Ianto didn't leave the Hub but they did meet the Doctor: HURRRAAAAAAAHHHH!! :D
